Bonen! (Beans) – Joke Boon (only in Dutch at this moment)
For months it was announced, the new book Bonen! of Joke Boon. The United Nations even declared 2016 the year of beans. Well if you can manage that ;-).
No all joking aside. I was looking for some time to lay my hands on this book because I find it for myself tremendously difficult to cook with beans. Yes I cook with beans in well known recipes like pea soup and hummus, but when it isn’t a usual way then I found that something quite difficult. Joke on the other hand made original 144 bean recipes in this book, while not using only the usual black, white or brown beans, but during her research for this book she encountered many other species which she certainly did not leave unmentioned. That makes this book a very nice reference guide and gives a lot of inspiration if you want to cook with beans.
The book starts with background information, history and common ingredients. The latter is always very easy because the where to buy information is added.
Then there are the 144 recipes divided in 12 months, whereas in between each chapter there is a piece of informative text. And the book ends with a recipe index that is very complete and where you can search through various ways.
- You want to cook something new with beans, this book has many recipes. Very surprising and sometimes more obvious, but always with a short introduction, a clear ingredient list and description.
- Nice clear pictures.
- Lots of background information, tips and tricks.
- Alternating between meat, fish and vegetarian
- Hardcover, always a plus for me in the kitchen.

Recipe: Black Bean Brownies (adapted from the book bonen – Joke Boon)
As I read through this book this recipe for brownies with black beans caught my eyes. And since I’m a chocolate lover par excellence, this seemed like an appropriate recipe to try. At the time I had to pulp the black beans and had to mingle with the delicious chocolate, my confidence in a well ending dropped to almost zero. What a surprise the brownies turned out to be. Creamy, delicious with great chocolate flavor. Very good. Do you taste the beans, you might ask? Yes, I’ve let it taste by a lot of friends, who were unknown test objects. Everyone sensed something, but the taste was delicious and they were very surprised when told. And it is a gluten-free version, so that’s a great plus. Conclusion: This recipe I will make more often!
