Add sugar and salt and combine until the sugar is dissolved.
Add the apples and onion and mix through the butter mixture, so everything is coated with butter. Spread the onion and apple in one layer on the bottom of the pan and leave to simmer for about 10 minutes on low heat.
Add the red cabbage on top and pour water and apple cider vinegar in the pan and bring to a boil.
Turn the heat low and simmer for 45 minutes.
In that time put the lid on the pan, but make sure to leave a small space open, so the moisture can escape.
Look after 30 minutes at the red cabbage. If it still contains a lot of moisture take of the lid in the last 15 minutes.
Taste and add salt and pepper if necessary. Serve immediately.
Pork chops with apple
Preheat the oven to 200 degrees Celsius.
Cut the apple in half and lay it on the baking plate.
Spread a lump of butter on the apple and sprinkle salt on top.
Bake for 45 minutes in the oven.
Take the chops and rub every chop with 1 tablespoon of mustard.
Heat a pan and pour in the oil and 2 tablespoons of butter.
When the foam disappears put the pork chops into the frying pan.
Bake 8 minutes on each side, until they are beautifully browned.
In this recipe, you won't blend the cabbage, so it may contain some lumps. If you don't like that put them in a blender right after adding the salt.
Use a mixture of oil and butter in the pan. That way you can fry your meat on high heat, without burning the butter.
When you've got a slow cooker you can use it to prepare the red cabbage. Melt the butter in a frying pan and add salt and sugar. Let this dissolve. Then mix the apples and onion through the butter and put everything in the slow cooker. Add the red cabbage, vinegar, and water and put it on medium heat for 4 hours. After 3 hours take a look at the cabbage. If it's too wet, take the lid of the slow cooker for the last hour.
