Make sure your BBQ is really hot.
Peel the onions and halve them. Cut them into slices.
Put the onions into a BBQ dish.
With a fork make some holes in the bratwurst and put it on top of the onions.
Pour the beer into the dish and cover the BBQ dish with some aluminum foil.
Put the dish on top of the BBQ and let it stew for 20 minutes.
Get the bratwurst out of the dish and put them on the hot grill.
Grill for 5 minutes and make sure that you turn the bratwurst halfway.
Serve the bratwurst with the caramelized onions.
You simmer the bratwurst in the beer to keep it juicy. If you just want to bake it in butter or oil, soak him before baking for 5 minutes in hot water. Give it a good dab (against splashes) and then bake. That way the sausage will stay nice and juicy.
You fry the onions that you use as a topping in a second pan (and do not use the onions that are cooked in beer), because they've got some bitter taste. By baking separately you get the delicious sweetness of the onion. Which is great as a garnish on the bratwurst.
