Instructions
Line a baking tray with baking paper.
Bread making machine kneading and first rise
Add the liquids first to the bowl and top them with the solid ingredients. Keep the yeast and salt as far as possible from each other (opposite corners).
4½ cups all-purpose flour, 2⅓ teaspoon yeast, ½ teaspoon baking powder, 2 teaspoons salt, 1 orange zest, 2 eggs, 6 tablespoons sunflower oil, 1 cup milk, ⅓ cup sugar
Turn the machine on and let it knead and rise 1 time. Follow these directions further after the second rise. (go to *)
Kneading by mixer or hand
Add all ingredients in a bowl and use a mixer with dough hooks.
Mix for 10 to 15 minutes until you have a smooth and elastic dough.
Transfer the dough to a greased bowl. Turn around once.
Place a plastic foil over the bowl and let the dough rise for an hour.
Second rise *
Place the dough onto the worktop and divide it into 7 equal pieces.
Make rolls of the buns.
Let them rest for 20 minutes.
Form them again into a ball and place them on the baking paper in a Christmas tree shape.
Let rise for 1 hour in a warm place, under a plastic foil.
Preheat the oven to 390 °F or 350 °F after 30 minutes.
1 egg, 4 tablespoons pearl sugar
Brush the buns with the egg wash at the end of the rising time and sprinkle pearl sugar on top.
Put the bread in the oven and let it bake for 20 minutes.
NOTES
1. Moist: During the first and second rise, cover your dough with plastic foil. This way, your dough stays moist during the rise periods.2. Egg wash: Brush the rolls with egg before baking, so you get a beautiful brown and shiny top.3. Baking tips:
When baking this bread, it's crucial to measure and weigh your ingredients carefully for a great result.
You want your bread to become airy, so you add yeast. But yeast can be killed by concentrated salt, so keep it as far apart as possible when adding the ingredients. You can also choose to knead the dough for a few minutes before adding the salt.
4. Storage
Room temperature: You can store the Christmas Tree buns in a (paper) bag at room temperature for up to two days.
Freezer: Freeze the buns in a freezer bag or container. This way, they stay good for up to 2 months. Thaw the buns at room temperature.
