I remember getting my first Air fryer. My husband bought it for me as a present. Of course, I was going to try it out, but I wasn't sure at the time if I was going to use it much. Now I'm behind on that. It has become a permanent fixture in the kitchen. I bake sandwiches, brownies, and fries in it.
Crispy sweet potatoes baked in the air fryer with a delicious spice rub! Serve them with sweet chili sauce BBQ sauce for a nice finishing touch.

- Sweet potato - You can already buy the sweet potato as fries, but you can also easily make them yourself. I chose to peel the potatoes, but you can just scrub them and eat the sweet potato fries with the skin on.
- Cornstarch - You add cornstarch to the spice mixture. Because the sweet potato contains virtually no starch, it becomes less crispy than normal fries. By adding cornstarch to the fries you get a crispy layer.
Step 1 - Cut the sweet potato into fries
Peel or scrub the sweet potatoes well. Cut the potatoes into fries. Make sure they are all the same size (that way they will be cooked at the same time) and not too thick.
Step 2 - Season the sweet potato fries
- Add cornstarch to the fries.
- Take the garlic powder and sprinkle them on the sweet potato.
- Spread the chili powder over the fries.
- Mix well. TIP Place the fries, cornflour, and herbs in a plastic bag and shake everything well. This way everything is evenly distributed and the fries are well covered with a layer of cornstarch.
Step 3 - Bake the fries in the Air fryer
Set the air fryer to 350 °F (180 °C) and bake the sweet potato fries for 15 minutes. Shake everything well every five minutes, so they get nice and crispy.
Step 4 - Make the Chili BBQ Sauce
- Put the mayonnaise and BBQ sauce in a bowl and pour in the chili sauce.
- Mix everything well. Serve the sauce with the fries!
💭 FAQ
The sweet potato is a tuber and not a potato. So it is a vegetable.
You can get them crispy in two ways:
1. Coat them with cornstarch (as we did in this recipe).
2. Bring a pan of water to the boil and add 3 tablespoons of cornstarch. Add the sweet potato and cook for 5 minutes. Drain and then sprinkle with garlic powder and chili. Bake them in the air fryer for 15 minutes.
Yes, that's possible. Then add 2 tablespoons of sunflower oil to the spice mixture. Mix everything well and spread the potatoes in one layer on a baking tray. If you have a lot of fries, divide them over two baking trays that are lined with baking paper. Bake the fries for 20 minutes in a preheated oven at 430 °F (220°C).
That's completely right. Sweet potato fries, as the name implies, contain natural sugars. These caramelize and that ensures that the fries become a bit browner when baking compared to potato fries. That's only a good sign in this case!
It is possible that the cornflour is not properly distributed over the fries. A second reason may be that the fries have not been shaken enough. If you have prepared them in the oven, they have been too close to each other and they will not become crispy.
