Why not ready-made Oven Fries?
Ready-made oven chips are often pre-fried and contain more fat. Some brands even add sugar to give the fries a nice color in the oven and Air fryer.
This time I opted for thick Flemish fries (thick fries), but you can also make great French fries with this recipe. Then cut the potatoes into long thin strips. Adjust the oven time (shorten it by 5 to 10 minutes) and remove the French fries from the oven when they are golden brown. And enjoy the fresh fries.
And do you enjoy fries? These sweet potato fries (Air Fryer) are perfect!
What do you need for Healthy and Crispy Baked French Fries?
To prepare these Baked French Fries (Oven Fries), you require the following ingredients. You can find the correct amounts in the recipe card at the bottom of the blog:

- Potatoes - Use floury potatoes to make this recipe. Russet, Doré, King Edward, and Maris Piper are great choices. They are high in starch and low in moisture. Or use a red potato, such as Roseval, if you want to eat with skin (or the Organic variant).
- Sea salt - For flavoring the chips.
- Sunflower oil - Frying in sunflower oil gives the fries a crispy exterior. Sunflower oil has a neutral taste (just like peanut oil). Olive oil does have a specific flavor and is therefore not recommended.

- Peel the potatoes (or serve with their skins on, but clean them well) and cut into the desired thickness.
- Put the potatoes in a pan with boiling water and cook for 10 minutes for a delicious soft inside.
- After 8 minutes, put a frying pan with sunflower oil on the fire and heat until it is hot. Remove the potatoes with a slotted spoon and quickly transfer them to the skillet. Fry for 2 minutes, quickly tossing the potatoes. They then steam dry quickly, giving them a crispy outside in the oven without too much oil.
- Spread the oven fries as much as possible in one layer on the baking tray. Bake crispy in a preheated oven at 460 °F (ca. 238 °C) for 25 minutes. Stir halfway through baking time.
These healthy fries from the oven are delicious with Gin-marinated salmon skewers, Italian chicken casseroles, and pulled pork from the slow cooker.
Tips, Substitutions, and Variations
- Variations:
- Garlic Parmesan - Sprinkle with garlic powder and freshly grated Parmesan, so it melts nicely.
- Spicy - Sprinkle with ⅛ teaspoon chili powder and cumin powder.
- Cajun fries - Flavoring with Cajun seasoning is so good!
- Air fryer - Fill the air fryer no more than ⅓ full of fresh fries. Preheat the Air fryer to 350 °F (ca. 177 °C). Bake the fries for 5 minutes and then shake them well. Repeat this three times.
First, briefly pre-boiling the potatoes and then quickly fry them dry in a hot pan in a bit of oil. This makes them wonderfully soft on the inside and gives them a crunchy outside. And you need much less fat.
