Easy Shawarma Pie With Green Beans
Winter is the season of hearty food - warm casseroles, bubbling stews, and cozy one-pan dinners. And this shawarma bake? It's a keeper.
It's loaded with flavor from homemade shawarma spices, crunchy green beans, gooey cheese, and flaky puff pastry. A dish that's both rustic and indulgent - and the best part? You can prep it in advance.
Here in the South of the Netherlands, carnival season means numerous busy evenings and quick dinners. So I love recipes like this - easy to assemble in the morning, pop it in the fridge, then bake just before dinner. While it's in the oven, you can tidy up, set the table, and before you know it… dinner's done.
Serve it with a spoonful of cool tzatziki on the side, and you've got a complete meal that feels like a treat.
What Do You Need?
(Exact measurements in the recipe card below.)

- Pork chops: Use boneless pork chops or pork tenderloin. Slice thinly for quick cooking. You can also use chicken, lamb or beef if you prefer.
- Shawarma spices: A mix of paprika, cumin, garlic powder, coriander, and cinnamon. Use store-bought or make your own blend.
- Oil: Olive oil or sunflower oil, for browning the meat.
- Puff pastry: Fresh or thawed frozen sheets; flaky and golden once baked.
- Green beans: Add freshness and crunch. Boil until just tender.
- Cheese: Mild grated cheese like Gouda or Edam melts beautifully.
- Dried thyme: Adds a warm herbal note that pairs perfectly with the savory filling.
How to Make It?
(Step-by-step directions below.)

- Step 1: Preheat oven to 430 °F (220 °C). Cut pork chops into thin strips. Mix with shawarma spices until coated. Heat oil in a pan and fry the meat until browned. Boil green beans until just tender, then drain.

- Step 2: Line a baking dish with puff pastry, covering the bottom and sides.

- Step 3: Spread green beans evenly over the pastry base. Spoon shawarma over the beans.

- Step 4: Sprinkle grated cheese on top and finish with dried thyme. Bake for 30 minutes until golden and crisp.
Top Tip
- Make it ahead in the morning and refrigerate - just bake it before dinner.
- Use chicken for the shawarma if you prefer lighter meat.
- Add sliced onions or bell peppers for extra flavor.
- Serve with: tzatziki, a simple green salad and maybe some pita bread to scoop up the filling.
