Tender Honey Garlic Chicken in the Slow Cooker
What I love about the slow cooker is that it does all the work for you. While you go about your day, your house slowly fills with the delicious smell of this dish. When I first made this recipe, everyone was amazed by the rich flavor and tender chicken. Even the kids, who usually don't like sauce, asked for more!
I like to serve this chicken with steamed rice and a portion of crunchy vegetables, such as broccoli or bok choy. The tender chicken, the rich sauce, and the fresh vegetables are truly delicious. And that sauce… It's so good that you'll want to make extra rice to avoid wasting anything.
Whether you make this dish on a regular weeknight or serve it to guests, it never fails to impress. Serve the chicken with some sesame seeds and finely chopped spring onion, and it will look like you've spent hours in the kitchen.
What Do You Need?
Which Sambal Do You Use?
You can use either sambal Oelek or sambal Badjak. Sambal Oelek has a bit more spice but is not too sharp. Sambal Badjak is a bit milder and has more herbs. Choose what you like; both work well! If you can't get sambal, you can also use chili paste or Sriracha.
Which Chicken Do You Use?
Chicken breast or chicken thigh cut into cubes are both suitable. Chicken thighs are a bit more tender, but chicken breast works fine, too.
How to Make It
- Step 1: Place the garlic, ginger, and sambal in the bottom of the slow cooker.
- Step 2: Mix everything well with soy sauce, honey, rice vinegar, and sesame oil.
- Step 3: Place the chicken cubes in the slow cooker and stir well to cover each piece with sauce. Set the slow cooker to low and cook the chicken for 4 hours.
- Step 4: Mix cornstarch and water in a bowl. Pour this over the chicken in the slow cooker, stir, and set it high for another 30 minutes.
Serve the chicken with steamed rice and your favorite vegetables. Garnish with sesame seeds and spring onion.
