A dessert completes any meal. And, of course, you can think of a delicious chocolate mousse, tiramisu, or trifle, but I love a great crumble with a scoop of ice cream! And it's super easy to make. First, mix the fresh sour and sweet raspberries and blueberries with the juicy apples and top it with a crumbly topping. Then, within 10 minutes, slide this crisp into the oven and bake it until golden brown.

What do you need for Apple & Blueberry Crumble?
To prepare this Apple Berry Crumble, you need the following ingredients. You can find the correct amounts in the recipe card at the bottom of the blog:
Fruit filling
- Apples - Suitable apples are Elstar, Jonagold, golden delicious, or Cox. Firm apples with a sweet and sour taste.
- Cinnamon - Has a sweet, woody flavor with a hint of lemon. We use the ground here.
- Brown sugar - To sweeten the fruit.
- Orange - You use orange juice, which gives the fruits a fresh citrus taste.
- Raspberries - Sweet, soft, and deliciously juicy. Do not wash them; wipe them clean with a damp piece of paper. Remove any leaves or stems by hand.
- Blueberries - Sweet and sour, really refreshing.
Crumble topping
- Butter - Use butter, cold and unsalted.
- Flour - Regular all-purpose flour.
- Brown sugar - To sweeten the crumble. Brown sugar is also used because it gives a caramelized flavor to the crisp.
- Oatmeal - this grain is a key ingredient of this apple raspberry crumble. When baked, it becomes wonderfully crispy.
- Salt - Balances the flavor in this dessert.
How to prepare Apple and Mixed Berry Crumble Recipe
You can find a printable recipe with a step-by-step description at the bottom of this blog.
- Peel the apples and remove the core. Cut into cubes and mix with cinnamon and sugar. Put in the baking dish. Drizzle with orange juice.
- Put the raspberries and blueberries in the baking dish and mix everything well.
- Cut the butter into cubes and add to the bowl of flour.
- Rub the butter into the flour with your fingers until you get small grains (they don't all have to be very small. Some larger pieces of butter give a delicious explosion of flavor when eating). Mix oatmeal and sugar with the butter and divide over the fruit mixture. Place in a preheated oven at 400 °F (200 °C) and bake for 40 minutes until the top is golden brown and crispy.
Serve with whipped cream, custard, or ice cream. TIP: This cognac ice cream recipe is super delicious and served with this crisp (and if children eat with it, try this white chocolate ice cream).
Tips, Substitutions, and Variations
- Crispy or Crumbly Crumble: This crumble is wonderfully crisp and baked until golden brown. If you prefer a crumble (it will be less crisp), add a little more flour to the topping.
- Ensure your butter is cold, so you get nice crumbs in different sizes. Cut it into cubes before you crumble it in the flour to mix it well.
- TIP! Do you have some crumble left over? Then eat it for breakfast the following day with some yogurt.
- Can't get your hands on fresh berries or raspberries (or are they out of season and overpriced and lacking in flavor?)? Use frozen fruit. Add that frozen (so don't let it thaw) and extend the baking time by 4 minutes.
- Would you instead make individual bowls for everyone? Divide the fruit and crumble it among six ramekins. Bake for 20 to 25 minutes until the crumble is golden brown.
- You can also replace apples with peach or nectarine
- Substitute (or supplement) raspberries and blueberries with red currants or blackberries.
- Use lemon juice instead of orange juice.
It depends on which country you are in, but it means the same thing and is used interchangeably. So, for example, in Australia, they usually use crumble, and in America, crisp.
A crumble is a topping you spread over fruit and bake in the oven until golden brown. You usually make the topping with butter, sugar, and flour, possibly supplemented with other ingredients such as oatmeal.
