How to Make Jam at Home - Easy Recipes + Tips for Storing and Sterilizing
Ever since I moved into my own place, I've been making jam. Big pots bubbling on the stove, the smell of summer fruit filling the kitchen, and glass jars slowly cooling on the counter. Even now, that warm feeling hasn't changed.
Making jam is not only delicious, it's also a cozy way to spend an afternoon. My pantry is full of homemade jams and compotes by now. And yes, the first jars have already been opened - thick layer on toast, cup of tea in hand. Pure joy.

How to Store Homemade Jam
Homemade jam can last a long time-if you do it right.
- Cool, dark pantry (unopened): 6 to 12 months shelf life.
- Refrigerator (after opening): Up to 3 months.
- Freezer: Let the jam cool fully before freezing. Store in airtight containers or ice cube trays (with lids). Keeps for about 3 months.
Important: If you see mold or it smells strange after opening, toss it out.
How To Check if Your Jam Has Set
One of the most common questions: How do I know if my jam is ready? Easy-use the cold plate test. Here's how it works:
- Chill a small plate in the fridge for at least 1 hour.
- Drop a little hot jam onto the plate.
- Wait a few seconds and gently push the edge of the drop with your finger.
What to look for:
- Does it run? Keep boiling a bit longer.
- Does it wrinkle or hold its shape? Your jam is done.
How To Sterilize Your Jam Jars
Clean jars are key. You want your jam to stay fresh and safe for months.
Two easy methods:
- Boiling water: Place jars and lids in boiling water for 5 minutes. Let dry on a clean towel.
- Dishwasher: Run jars and lids on a hot cycle (no detergent!). Use them straight away and seal immediately after filling.
Pro Tip: Use a funnel when filling your jars. It keeps the rim clean and helps the jar seal properly.
