Red cabbage with apples and balsamic: A surprising flavor combination
When I think of my favorite vegetable dishes when I was a child, they always include red cabbage with apples. I remember the wonderful smell when the red cabbage was simmering on the stove. And where you slowly cooked the red cabbage.
The apples in this red cabbage recipe made it a fresh, nice, and sweet side dish. A great recipe. But when I added balsamic vinegar, it became even better. The taste of the red cabbage became even deeper and heartier. I recommend it because this gives a delicious flavor.

What do you need for Easy Braised Red Cabbage with Balsamic and Apples?
You require the following ingredients to prepare this Braised Red Cabbage with Apples and Balsamic. You can find the correct amounts in the recipe card at the bottom of the blog:
- Red cabbage: Because red cabbage is hard, it is quite a bit of work to clean it. And cutting is also quite a job. However, you can do the latter with a knife and cutting plates in a food processor. But this is one of those typical vegetables you can buy well pre-cut in the supermarket, saving you a lot of work.
- Butter: For frying the red cabbage, and gives a creamy taste to this vegetable.
- Apples: Honeycrisp, Jonagold, Pink Lady, or Braeburn are suitable for braised red cabbage. They are nice and sweet.
- Balsamic glaze: Delicious balsamic vinegar is reduced to a syrup (or glaze, as the name says), making it velvety soft, and fuller in taste.
- Sugar: For sweetening the red cabbage
- Cinnamon and nutmeg: to warm up the taste of the red cabbage.
- Shallot: Gives extra flavor to the red cabbage with apples. A shallot has a bit more spice compared to a regular onion.
