I've been making these skewers for years-for cozy weekend dinners, summer BBQs, and even quick weeknight meals. What I love most is the mix of sweet, salty, and just a little heat in every bite. And the best part? They're ready to grill in just 30 minutes. Super simple, no fuss, and packed with flavor.
Whether you grill them outside in the sun for your family or a party, these skewers are a recipe that works every time. Serve them with rice and a fresh salad for a complete and healthy meal.
These skewers have been tested and approved in my own kitchen. Here are my top tips to help you make them just right:
Tips for Making the Best Sweet Soy and Mustard Chicken Skewers
- Use sweet soy sauce (kecap Manis or Medja) for that perfect sweet-salty balance.
- Marinate the chicken for at least 30 minutes (longer is even better-overnight works great).
- Soak wooden skewers in water for at least 1 hour before grilling to prevent burning.
- Cut chicken into equal cubes (2×2 cm) for even cooking.
- A hot grill is essential so your meat won't stick to the grill, for a great sear and those lovely grill marks.

Ingredients
- ½ orange, juice
- 2 tablespoons Kecap Manis, or kecap Medja
- 1 tablespoon sesame oil
- 2 tablespoons sunflower oil
- 1 teaspoon mustard
- 1 teaspoon fresh ginger, grated
- 1 clove garlic, squeezed
- 2 teaspoons sesame seeds
- 1 pound chicken breasts, cut into 1 × 1 inch (2 × 2 cm) cubes

Instructions
- In a large bowl, mix orange juice, soy sauce, sesame oil, sunflower oil, mustard, ginger, garlic, and sesame seeds.½ orange, 2 tablespoons Kecap Manis, 1 tablespoon sesame oil, 2 tablespoons sunflower oil, 1 teaspoon mustard, 1 teaspoon fresh ginger, 1 clove garlic, 2 teaspoons sesame seeds
- Add the chicken cubes, stir well to coat, cover with plastic wrap, and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes.1 pound chicken breasts
- Thread chicken pieces onto the soaked skewers. Keep chilled until grilling.
- Heat a grill or BBQ. And grill the skewers for about 4 minutes on each side, until golden and cooked through (165 ℉ internal temperature).
Notes
- Raw skewers: Store up to 2 days refrigerated.
- Grilled skewers: Store in an airtight container in the fridge up to 3 days.
- Freezer: Freeze raw or cooked skewers for up to 2 months. Wrap well in airtight containers.
