I love snacks, and roll-ups are among my favorite appetizers. And these caprese pinwheels are on that list. They are easy to make and perfect for a party, picnic, or lunch.
Caprese Pinwheels recipe: A delicious and easy snack
These caprese wrap snacks are inspired by one of the most famous Italian salads: the Caprese Salad. White, red, and green are represented in these wrap snacks (the Italian flag colors). A delicious combination of Mozzarella, sun-dried tomatoes, pesto, and basil. By rolling these ingredients in a wrap, you get a delicious vegetarian snack with a sublime taste that looks beautiful.
Do you know why pinwheels are so high on my list of tasty snacks? You can adapt them very well to your taste or to what you have at home. For example, with this recipe, you can drizzle balsamic vinegar over it. Add extra iceberg lettuce (to make everything even more crunchy), or opt for a tomato tapenade instead of green pesto.
You have many options, which makes me like to serve tortilla pinwheels.
What do you need for Caprese Salad Roll-Ups?
To prepare these Caprese pinwheels, you require the following ingredients. And these ingredients are all readily available in the supermarket. The correct quantities can be found in the recipe card at the bottom of the blog:
- Pesto: Has an aromatic and creamy taste, determined by the cheese and basil. The essential ingredients are olive oil, basil leaves, garlic, Parmesan cheese, and pine nuts. You can buy a ready-made pesto or easily make it yourself.
- Mozzarella: Has a creamy taste. The tastiest and only real Mozzarella is the buffalo mozzarella. So really recommended. But if you can't gain weight, you can also use cow's milk Mozzarella.
- Sun-dried tomatoes: For a delicious bite in these caprese wrap snacks. Even better than sun-dried tomatoes are semi-sun-dried tomatoes or salad tomatoes (I can eat a bowl of those).
- Basil: A soft green herb with a spicy taste, a sweet aroma, and a little pepper.
- Tortilla wraps: This recipe uses wheat tortilla wraps. If you go for healthy, you can also take whole wheat wraps. Do you want to use less carbohydrates? Then use carrot, bell pepper, or beet wraps.
How to prepare Caprese Tortilla Wraps
You can find a printable recipe with a step-by-step description at the bottom of this blog.
- Heat the tortilla wraps briefly and place them in front of you. Smear the wrap with pesto.
- Divide thinly sliced Mozzarella over the center of the wrap.
- Add the (semi) sun-dried tomatoes. Spread basil leaves on the Mozzarella.
- Now roll up the wrap tightly and wrap it in plastic wrap. Place in the refrigerator for at least an hour to flavor.
To serve: Cut the wraps into thin rolls and add skewers. Delicious on a snack board with peach skewers with ham and basil, egg salad without mayo, and lemon garlic hummus. Garnish with some finely chopped basil.
Tips, Substitutions, and Variations
- Sun-dried tomatoes: You can replace them with thinly sliced fresh tomatoes, cherry tomatoes, or roasted peppers.
- Extra flavor: Drizzle some balsamic cream over the center of the wrap.
- Extra vegetables: You can add grilled zucchini, eggplant, or avocado. Or thinly sliced iceberg lettuce, nice and fresh.
